GPID: What It Is and Why Publishers Should Implement It in Prebid

Publishers using Prebid typically focus their optimization efforts on variables such as the number of demand partners, timeouts, floors, latency, and others.

However, there is another signal that can influence how DSPs recognize, evaluate, and buy inventory: the Global Placement ID, better known as GPID.

What Is GPID?

GPID was introduced as an initiative led by The Trade Desk. It is a unique, persistent identifier that represents a specific ad placement on a website or app.

Since each SSP uses its own internal identifiers, without GPID it can be difficult for DSPs to determine which bid requests correspond to the same placement and, potentially, the same impression.

For publishers, this creates an indirect but important challenge: their inventory may appear fragmented, duplicated, or inconsistently represented to buyers.

What Are the Benefits of Implementing GPID?

✅ Helps Protect Access to Ad Spend

DSPs use Supply Path Optimization (SPO) strategies to reduce duplicate paths, infrastructure costs, and unnecessary intermediaries.

Not sending GPID may increase the risk of a supply path being considered less transparent or more difficult to compare. Some monetization platforms already recommend implementing GPID to help avoid being excluded from current or future DSP spend due to Supply Path Optimization policies.

✅ Helps Identify High-Quality Placements

A publisher may have placements with very different performance characteristics across the same website.

For example, one banner placement may achieve high viewability and strong user engagement, while another placement of the same size, located at the bottom of an article, may perform significantly worse.

Without a persistent identifier, these differences may be lost or fragmented across different SSPs. With GPID, buyers can build a performance history tied to a specific placement rather than relying only on the domain, creative size, or ad unit.

According to internal data from Index Exchange, publishers that send GPID achieve CPMs up to 26% higher than those that do not.

Step by Step: How to Check GPID in Your Prebid Implementation

Verifying that GPID is correctly implemented requires some familiarity with Prebid. To make this process easier, we developed Publisher Audit Lite, a Chrome extension that provides a quick and simple initial validation.

You can download Publisher Audit Lite from the Chrome Web Store here.

To review your implementation, follow these steps:

  1. Install Publisher Audit Lite from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open a page containing the placements you want to analyze.
  3. Wait until the page has fully loaded, including Google Publisher Tag, Prebid, and the Header Bidding auction.
  4. Open Publisher Audit Lite from the Chrome extensions menu.
  5. Run the analysis on the active page.
  6. Review the GPID section to verify whether the analyzed placements are sending this identifier.

It is also recommended to repeat the process across different page types and key sections of your site. This helps ensure that the implementation is consistent across your entire inventory, rather than on a single page or template.

Publisher Audit Lite is designed as an initial validation tool. It quickly detects whether GPID is present, but it is not intended to replace a more in-depth technical review.

For a more comprehensive assessment, you can request a Video Audit.

In addition to verifying your GPID implementation, the audit reviews other aspects of your Header Bidding configuration and identifies opportunities for improvement.

In conclusion, GPID is not a substitute for a strong monetization strategy, nor does it guarantee higher revenue on its own. However, implementing it correctly and consistently removes a potential barrier that may prevent buyers from accurately recognizing, comparing, and valuing your inventory.
